Ferronickel Submerged Arc Furnace

Submerged Arc Furnace,SAF

Ferronickel Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF) is a crucial component in the production of ferronickel, an alloy primarily used in the production of stainless steel. This specialized furnace plays a vital role in the extraction and refining process of nickel, enabling the production of high-quality ferronickel with exceptional properties.

Ferronickel Submerged Arc Furnace Principle & Features

The Ferronickel SAF operates on the principle of submerged arc smelting, a process that involves the reduction of nickel oxide ores with carbonaceous materials.

The furnace consists of a vertical cylindrical structure lined with refractory material to withstand extreme temperatures and corrosive conditions.

The design of the furnace ensures efficient heat transfer and maximum utilization of energy.

The smelting process within the Ferronickel SAF begins with the charging of raw materials, including nickel oxide ore, coal, and fluxes. The materials are carefully measured and added to the furnace in specific ratios to achieve the desired chemical composition of the final product. Once the furnace is charged, an electric current is passed through the electrodes, generating intense heat.

As the materials are heated, the temperature inside the furnace reaches approximately 2000°C (3632°F). At this temperature, the coal undergoes a process called carbothermic reduction, where carbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. This reaction leads to the reduction of the nickel oxide ore, converting it into metallic nickel.

The liquid nickel droplets formed during the reduction process sink to the bottom of the furnace due to their higher density, hence the term submerged arc furnace.

The molten ferronickel collects at the furnace's hearth and is periodically tapped off for further processing.

The remaining slag, composed mainly of impurities, floats on top of the molten metal and is removed through slag tapping.

The Ferronickel Submerged Arc Furnace offers several advantages over other smelting methods. Its submerged nature minimizes heat loss, ensuring high energy efficiency. The process also allows for precise control of the temperature and chemical composition, resulting in a superior quality ferronickel product. Additionally, the SAF has a high production capacity and can operate continuously, leading to improved productivity and reduced downtime.

Furthermore, the Ferronickel SAF is known for its environmental benefits. The use of electric energy instead of fossil fuels significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, making it a more sustainable option. The closed-system design of the furnaces also prevents the release of harmful gases and particulate matter into the atmosphere.

In conclusion, the Ferronickel Submerged Arc Furnace plays a pivotal role in the production of ferronickel, a crucial alloy in the stainless steel industry.

Its unique design and operating principles enable efficient and environmentally friendly smelting processes, resulting in high-quality ferronickel that meets the demands of various industries worldwide.
