Ladle Furnace vs Blast Furnace

Ladle Furnace vs Blast Furnace

Both ladle furnace and blast furnace are popular equipment in the smelting industry. The smelted products are different, so they have different characteristics and advantages. Xi'an Hani will take you to understand them together.

Ladle Furnace vs Blast Furnace

Ladle Furnace

The ladle furnaces is a kind of refining equipment outside the furnace that uses electric arc heating under vacuum conditions.

It is refined by placing the molten steel initially smelted in a general steelmaking furnace in a special ladle. Based on ASEA-SKF refining furnace, VAD furnace, VOD method and other refining technologies and equipment, it is developed by adopting the mature experience of other refining methods and avoiding its difficulties.

Blast Furnace

Blast furnaces is iron-making equipment and the first process of iron and steel smelting, that is, iron ore must be smelted in a blast furnace to obtain pig iron blocks for various purposes, or molten iron for steelmaking.

The shell of the blast furnace is steel plate, the shell is lined with refractory bricks, and there is cooling equipment between the furnace shell and the refractory material.

The blast furnace body is divided into five parts from top to bottom: the furnace throat, the furnace body, the furnace waist, the furnace bosh, and the hearth.

Process Characteristics

Ladle Furnace

LF ladle furnace equipment mainly includes ladle, furnace cover, arc heating system, vacuum system and feeding device.

The process of ladle furnace mainly includes slagging, heating, argon stirring, slag composition adjustment, molten steel composition adjustment, vacuum treatment and heat preservation, etc.

The quality of the primary molten steel is related to whether the refining furnace can successfully achieve the purpose of refining. Therefore, the phosphorus content of the primary molten steel is required to be less than 0.015%, and different degrees of final deoxidation are carried out when the steel is tapped from the primary smelting furnace.

Blast Furnace

The blast furnace production process is the process of smelting iron ore into pig iron at high temperature.

Load iron ore, coke, and flux (limestone) for slagging from the top of the furnace, and blow in preheated air from the tuyeres located at the lower part of the furnace along the circumference of the furnace.

At high temperature, the carbon in the coke (some blast furnaces also inject auxiliary fuels such as pulverized coal, heavy oil, and natural gas) reacts with the oxygen blown into the air to produce high temperature and reducing gases. The slowly descending charge is heated in the medium, and the iron oxide in the iron ore is reduced to metallic iron.

It can be said that the blast furnaces is the pre-order equipment of the ladle furnaces.

Ladle Furnace vs Blast Furnace You can choose the right furnace according to the specific needs of the project and site.
