SAF uses carbon or magnesia refractory material for furnace lining. The electrode is inserted into the material in the furnace for submerged arc operation, and the arc energy and current are used to pass through the material to generate energy due to the resistance of the material to melt the metal. It is an industrial furnace with continuous operation, continuous feeding and intermittent discharge of metal or slag.
70% of the system reactance of the submerged arc furnace is generated by the short-circuit system, and the maximum current can reach tens of thousands of amperes.
Therefore, it is difficult for the natural power factor of the submerged arc furnace to reach more than 0.85, which will lead to a series of reasons. The power imbalance between the three phases increases, and the highest unbalance can reach more than 20%, which leads to low smelting efficiency and increased electricity costs.
