DC electric furnaces VS AC electric furnaces

The electric furnace type plays a decisive role in the main technical and economic indicators and production efficiency. From the classification of power supply methods, electric furnaces are divided into DC electric furnaces and AC electric furnaces.

Compared with the AC electric furnace, the DC electric furnace has the advantages of lower electrode consumption, less impact on the power grid, lower smelting noise, and lower smelting power consumption, but the equipment investment is relatively high, and the bottom electrode structure is relatively complicated.

In recent years, needle-type bottom electrodes have basically solved the problem of short furnace bottom life. However, the penetration rate of DC electric furnaces in China is not high, and AC electric furnaces are still the main ones.

With the continuous innovation and practice of equipment manufacturers and production enterprises, the main technical indicators such as power consumption and electrode consumption of AC electric furnaces have been close to those of DC electric furnaces.

Typical AC electric furnaces in China and other countries include traditional electric furnaces, continuous charging (Consteel) electric furnaces, and scrap preheating electric furnaces (Fuchs shaft furnace, Ecoarc electric furnace, Quantum electric furnace, Sharc electric furnace, double-shell electric furnace, etc.). At present, China's traditional electric furnaces and Consteel electric furnaces have a high penetration rate, but the future selection of electric furnaces will pay more attention to continuous feeding, scrap preheating, environmental protection, waste heat recovery, and the optimization and integration of intelligent steelmaking technology.
