Steel Making Electric Arc Furnace

Electric Arc Furnace

The industrial furnace that generates electric arc heating by metal electrode or nonmetal electrode is called electric arc furnace.

Electric arc furnace (EAF) is an electric furnace that uses the high temperature generated by electrode arc to smelt ores and metals.

When the gas discharge forms the arc, the energy is very concentrated, and the arc temperature is above 3000 ℃.

For smelting metal, Electric Arc Furnace is more flexible than other steelmaking furnaces, which can effectively remove impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus, easy to control furnace temperature and small equipment area, which is suitable for smelting high-quality alloy steel.

The furnace body of EAF is composed of furnace cover, furnace door, tapping trough and furnace body.

The furnace bottom and furnace wall are built with basic refractory or acid refractory.

According to the transformer capacity per ton of furnace capacity, EAF is divided into ordinary power Electric Arc Furnace, high power EAF and UHP EAF.

Electric arc furnace steelmaking is to input electric energy into Electric Arc Furnace through graphite electrode, and the electric arc between electrode end and furnace charge is used as heat source for steelmaking.

Electric energy is the heat source of EAF, and the atmosphere in Electric Arc Furnace can be adjusted, which is very beneficial to smelting steel with more oxidizable elements.

The main parts of electric arc furnace are the roof, hearth (lower part of a furnace, from where molten metal is collected), electrodes, and side walls.

The roof consists of three holes through which the electrodes are inserted. The roof is made up of alumina and magnesite-chromite bricks.

The hearth includes metal and slag. The tilting mechanism is used to pour the metal that is molten to the cradle by shifting the furnace.

For the electrode removal and furnace charging (topping up scrap metals), roof retraction mechanism is incorporated.

The provision for fume extraction is also given around the furnace considering the health of operators.

In AC electric furnace, electrodes are three in number.

These are round in section. Graphite is used as electrodes because of high electric conductivity.

Carbon electrodes are also used.

The electrodes positioning system helps to raise and lower the electrodes automatically.

The electrodes get highly oxidized when the current density is high.
